Costa Rica!

Just hearing the name of this tropical Central America country brings back good memeories. I had the luck and privilege to live and work here from June 2003 till August 2005.

It was in May 2000, I first visited Costa Rica. My friend Frank moved there in 1999 to open a Bed & Breakfast in Jaco, a beach town on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Obviously, I had to see this place. I was not disappointed at all. The food was excellent, the beach was quiet and the town had its tropical laid back atmosåhere. It felt like the home away from home you always dream of. During the next three years it became my favourite vacation country. I was therefore (pleasantly) surprised when I got an offer to live and work in Costa Rica in 2003. Somebody actually wanted to pay me to live and work in my favourite vacation country! I of course didn't need much time to think about that.  :-)

Already having a good friend there obviously made it even easier. The free weekends nd holidays available, I mostly spent in Jaco. Even after my departure from Costa Rica, I have been back visitng every year since. Frank does not have his Bed & Breakfast any longer but is still in Jaco.

Jaco, unfortunately, has fallen victim of greed and the hunger for quick and easy money and highrise condo buildings on the beach and other property developments have more thea disturbed the cozy atmosphere there was when I first visited. The beach has also changed and is more dirty than I ever remember it. I used to take a walk up and down the beach every morning, a one and a half hour walk, but nowadays it's not the same fun as it used to be.

I lived in a small town called Ciudad Colon where I rented an apartment. My landlord, John, was a seasoned expat who had lived and worked in more countries than I. The apartment was on the top of the town behind his own house with a fantastic view of the valley. Thanks to John and Johana's generous hospitality, I have been able to enjoy this view both times I visited Costa Rica since my departure. And thanks to Frank's generous hospitality, I can still enjoy Jaco (or what's left of it.
